Welcome back for the last review for The Mighty Thor! This set was so massive in what it supplied us with that I had to break the review up into 3 separate articles. Today, I want to talk about the equipment that are in the set, as they’re poised to be the best part.

Last week we had a set review up for all the regular figures found in booster packs. On Tuesday I reviewed the Colossals on our sister sight, which you can find here. For today’s article, I want to cover the weapons themselves as they’re arguably the most important aspect of the newest set. I’m sure some of you are wondering why I’m doing yet another review for this set, but I’ve heard from a lot of people that they wanted a ranking of each equipment as many will chase after just those over tracking down the figures they come with (and since online retailers are selling the items individually). Let’s face it, Thor is a really good set, and it does warrant all the breakdowns, and one mega article isn’t something people want to read.

This review is going to be less like our set reviews and more like its own entity. Almost every single one of these items is outstanding for the points, so it’s not really fair to assign a 1-5 scoring system. Instead, I want to compare how much they’re currently listed at online (only those in stock, or the highest if out of stock) and give you an idea of whether it’s worth that or not, which of course is my humble opinion.

Let’s take a look at each of them, starting with the generics rather than starting numerically.

Generic Equipment

hammer.PNG

• S017 Hammer – This is a decent effect, but nothing earth-shattering. 3 Points certainly isn’t overkill for an effect that can add tokens to the opposing character, but the odds of this actually doing something for the action you’ll spend to equip it and the points you’ll need to burn on it just aren’t really worth it. Like most items here though, there probably isn’t anything else you’re doing with 3 points, so it’s better than a regular heavy object.

Price: $5.99 (CoolStuff) – Not worth it. I would wait for this to drop to around $2-$3 before buying.

Mace.PNG

• S018 Mace – Knockback is a much better effect now that falling damage is a real threat for any single-base figure. While the Hammer is a point more and requires certain attack roles to work, the Mace just happens and grants a new ability for your character. Overall, this is a great item.

Price: $12.99 (TrollAndToad) – Woah nelly, that’s a lot for a generic item! I would say this thing is worth around the higher single digits, but nothing over $10.

Bladed Hammer.PNG

• S019 Bladed Hammer – Adding a blade to the hammer changes its effect more than we might have thought. While it’s much harder to add tokens than the Hammer, this thing is worth it just for the better chance at rolling critical hits without being tied to a chase. For 4 points, this seems like a good bet.

Price: $8.99 (TrollAndToad) – This might be a tad high, but not terrible. Maybe wait about a week.

Casket.PNG

• S020 Healing Casket – This is a massive shift in points compared to the rest, but you’re getting a much stronger power than knockback in Support. If you want to sneak some type of healing onto a team without spending the points on a dedicated, non-themed support figure, this could be a great option. If you’re not concerned with that, it’s probably not worth its points as you could have 2 ID cards.

Price: $12.99 (TrollAndToad) – Honestly, this feels too expensive for what it does.

Axe.PNG

• S021 Axe – Forget combining effects; the axe goes straight for the kill with overall improved critical hits. Remember paying 75 points for Scarlet Witch for essentially the same effect? How about getting that for only 3 points and not worrying about theme or easy points? This thing is a beast, and potentially the best of the generic weapons.

Price: $9.99 (TrollAndToad) – While I don’t like double digits on any of these, I would probably drop $10 on this one. It’s really good.

Staff.PNG

• S022 Staff – Giant Reach might not seem that impressive, but this is a lot better than it seems. Giving someone like The Hulk who struggles with how far they can move an extra square for reach while not tying him down and attempting breakaway is really good for 3 points.

Price: $4.99 (TrollAndToad) – Yeah, this is almost a must in my opinion.

Spear.PNG

• S023 Spear – You’re essentially spending 2 more points than the Staff and adding the option of throwing it for an object attack. Sure, that’s pretty good.

Price: $4.50 (TrollAndToad) – If you don’t mind spending 5 points instead of 3, it’s a discount over the Staff!

Sword.PNG

• S024 Sword – Adding Blades to any close combatant is almost always good, especially with the new changes the Blades in that you have a minimum result of printed minus 1. Throwing this onto a brick for only 4 points means you can potentially max damage on them for virtually no risk. Likewise, giving this to 1 damage pieces gives them a lot more fuel. Competed with the Axe for best generic.

Price: $8.99 (TrollAndToad) – It’s under $10, so in my opinion it’s worth it. Probably a lot better than trying to get a Colossal Flora, too.

Uncommon, Rare, and Super Rare Equipment

Bloodaxe.PNG

• S001 Bloodaxe – While the Battle Fury is going to hurt since it no longer lets a character be carried, the Exploit Weakness and, most importantly, Steal Energy are just silly. This thing is incredible and adds so much versatility to a character and is actually worth its points.

Price: $1.99 (TrollAndToad) – Get it. This is plain and simply a great item to have in your collection.

Knobbed.PNG

• S002 Knobbed Mace – The knobbed mace requires a little thought on how you want to use it and how you get the most bang for your buck, but against a One Man Army team, this is going to be a brutal piece to utilize. 3 points is pretty good deal at virtually stopping 1 figure from hitting your team.

Price: $0.79 (TrollAndToad) – Again, at this price value, there’s no reason to pass on it.

Frog.PNG

• S003 Frogjolnir – The important aspect here is that it turns someone tiny, meaning they get a bump in defense against range and can be carried by anyone. It’s no Pym Particles, but it’s close.

Price: $1.99 (TrollAndToad) – This is a pretty solid price for size-changing shenanigans.

Frey.PNG

• S004 Frey – While the Sword is good, Frey is better as it gives you absolutely no risk of rolling under your printed damage value. This makes Balder’s sword better for the many 2 damage clicks out there as now they actually have 0 risk of rolling under damage. 7 points is a little costly though.

Price: $2.49 (TrollAndToad) – Pretty simple; if you want Blades for under $9, go with Frey. If you want it for only 4 points, opt for the sword, but pay triple.

Crowbar.PNG

• S005 Enchanted Crowbar – The Bloodaxe is amazing, but the Crowbar is just better. While you don’t get the Steal Energy, you do get the ability to completely shut down reducers on any character that you hit. With all the Invincible and Power Cosmic being passed around, this is a must-have item.

Price: $3.99 (CoolStuff) – Same as the Bloodaxe; get this one. $4 is a steal on this.

Mirror.PNG

• S006 Mirror of Mysolljh – Shape Change has become quite the powerful defensive option as it still only has one true counter in Battle Fury which has its own problems. Add in the fact that you’re almost guaranteed to make your roll and you’ve got a very strong defensive option.

Price: $10.99 (TrollAndToad) – Hopefully this comes down a couple bucks as it’s a little tough justifying spending Super Rare money on Shape Change, albeit a very good one. Still worth it though.

Deuling.PNG

• S007 Dueling Sword – If you don’t want the bells and whistles that a lot of these add and just want an almost guaranteed chance to hit a single target, this is a great option. Virtually no character is going to miss with a +2 to their attack value. Unfortunately, it is only useful in close attacks though.

Price: $5.99 (TrollAndToad) – Not bad. I’d like to see this hit $5 on the nose, but it’s a solid investment.

Ball.PNG

• S008 Enchanted Ball and Chain – Quake got a huge buff, and the Ball & Chain takes this even further as the character will deal their printed damage value to every hit target. 10 points is a lot to pay, but the sheer amount of damage that this can deal is insane, and perfect for a heavy beater than can get in for an alpha strike.

Price: $14.99 (TrollAndToad) – Our most expensive item yet! This is totally up to you as the cost is pretty high for a single item. My opinion is it’s worth every penny.

Chase Equipment

Image result for mjolnir comics

Mjolnir.PNG

• S009 Mjolnir – Frankly, this is the best item in the set, bar none. The applications this provides are endless, from shutting down Energy Shield/Deflection characters like Super Rare Green Lantern to giving huge bricks with Charge an even further swing. If the ‘range attacks are melee’ option isn’t enough, you also get +1 to attack and damage when you’re actually adjacent. 10 points is a steal, and it honestly feels like it should cost more.

Price: $29.99 (TrollAndToad) OUT OF STOCK – If you can find this thing for under $30, buy it. I know it’s a lot for just an item, but believe me; this will see competitive play 100%.

Thunder.PNG

• S010 Thunderstrike – I love the Bloodaxe for the Steal Energy, but Thunderstrike is just better at healing your character. With both Force Blast and Leap/Climb, you’re giving a character a lot of tools to disengage, while also giving them a way to heal whenever they knock someone back. With careful planning, that can happen more than once in a turn meaning you’re getting a lot of free clicks for just 10 points.

Price: $19.99 (CoolStuff) OUT OF STOCK – Yeah, this one is worth it. I might try and hunt for one around $15, but if you manage to find it in-stock for $20, pounce on it.

Storm.PNG

• S011 Stormbreaker – Quake got a buff, Energy Explosion got a nerf, and Stormbreaker grants both, along with a bonus to your range. What’s nice about this is that Stormbreaker gives you both options to neutralize a swarm team, or rather any team that groups pieces. On snipers like Nick Fury and Green Arrow, that +2 to range will be a huge help as well.

Price: $27.99 (TrollAndToad) OUT OF STOCK – This is a little too high in my opinion. I would drop a good $15-$20 on Bill’s hammer, but not this much.

Winters.PNG

• S012 Casket of Ancient Winters – Plain and simple, I’m not a fan. The amount of setting up this item requires that won’t obstensively hurt your own force for two turns is craziness. I get that a turn of lockdown can be very powerful, but there’s just too much that you need to do here.

Price: $19.99 (CoolStuff) OUT OF STOCK – If you really like the mechanic and you want this item, I would wait for it to drop to around $10. I seriously don’t think it’s worth anything more.

Jarn.PNG

• S013 Jarnbjorn – I don’t know about you, but I’ll take extremely improved critical hit chances any day of the week, and 10 points seems like a damn bargain. With a Probability Control piece on your team, the odds of this thing pulling its weight effectively doubles, and your opponents are going to feel that sting.

Price: $24.99 (TrollAndToad) OUT OF STOCK – While I love this equipment, I wouldn’t pay more than $20 for it. It’s a one-trick-pony that does its trick very well; but still only one trick.

Loki.PNG

• S014 Loki’s Staff – 12 points is a lot to pay for Shape Change, but unlike the Mirror, there’s no chance that this just gets destroyed. You’re also getting Mind Control and it’s pretty safe to say that the somewhat-buff to the power helps the value here. It’s certainly not a point-and-KO item like Mjolnir, but it’s still very good.

Price: $15.99 (TrollAndToad) – You could probably wait for this to come to around $10, but since it is tied to a chase, this might not happen.

Gungnir.PNG

• S015 Gungnir – Odin’s Spear is a double-edged blade. The immunity to rerolls can be very good on the right character, but also prevents you from horrible failures, and can actually decrease the playability of someone like Jakeem. What Gungnir is really good at is a single hit that you absolutely need to make, which it will do for you.

Price: $19.99 (CoolStuff) OUT OF STOCK – This one is tough as it’s a very unique item. I would probably keep your reservations around the $15 mark.

Dragon.PNG

• S016 Dragonfang – There’s two other items that give Blades in this set, but Dragonfang is unique in that it has a somewhat-previous Blades rule in that it grants you a once-per-turn reroll on the result. Is that worth the additional 3 points over Frey or the 6 points over the generic Sword? I really don’t know as it depends on who you want to buff.

Price: $19.99 (CoolStuff) OUT OF STOCK – This one is really about how much you want to spend versus the effect as we have two additional options for the power. Personal opinion; pick one of the others. If this drops to $12, it’s a solid investment.

It’s pretty obvious that hunting the equipment for this set can be quite the pricey endeavor, so it’s essential to pick and choose what you want carefully. Perhaps you can only afford one Chase-level equipment, but can get all the regular rarity ones. Maybe the generic pieces from the colossal are what you particularly want to hunt down. There are a lot of options here, and while I’m sure there will be a lot of players like myself that want all of them (that is except for the Casket of Ancient Winters for yours truly), many of you will probably only want a handful. For those of you seeking this path, I hope this helped you decide which items you want and which you’ll pass up.

What are your thoughts on this new round of equipment? Which items are you really looking to use and who would you pair them with? I’d love to see what you come up with!

With the combination of these and the colossals, The Mighty Thor sure seems like a very good and valuable set. Thankfully, after three articles, I’m finally done with my coverage and can hop back into other content.

I’ll see you all next week and remember, the real fun beings when you’re Two Clicks From KO!
